Summary

o A vulnerability in the Umbrella Connector component of Cisco IOS XE
Software for Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches could allow an
unauthenticated, remote attacker to trigger a reload, resulting in a denial
of service condition on an affected device.

The vulnerability is due to insufficient error handling when parsing DNS
requests. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a series
of malicious DNS requests to an Umbrella Connector client interface of an
affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause a
crash of the iosd process, which triggers a reload of the affected device.

Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There
are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.

Affected Products

  o Vulnerable Products

This vulnerability affects Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches if they are
running Cisco IOS XE Software releases 16.12.1 or 16.12.2 and have the
Umbrella Integration feature enabled. The Umbrella Integration feature is
not enabled in Cisco IOS XE Software by default.

    Determine the Umbrella Integration Configuration

For the Umbrella Integration to be properly enabled on a device, both of
the following conditions must be true:

     1. At least one interface needs to be configured as an "umbrella out"
        interface
     2. At least one interface needs to be configured as an "umbrella in"
        interface

    Option 1: show umbrella config

Administrators can check the Umbrella Integration configuration using the
show umbrella config | below Interface Config command, looking for the
    following lines:

     1. Number of interfaces with "umbrella out" config
     2. Number of interfaces with "umbrella in" config

If both lines list a count of at least one (1), the device is vulnerable.
If either count is zero, if the command does not return any output, or if
the command does not exist, the Umbrella Integration is not properly
configured and the device is not affected by the vulnerability described in
    this advisory.

The following example shows the output of the show umbrella config | below
Interface Config command on a device that has the Umbrella Integration
    configured and is vulnerable:

switch# show umbrella config | below Interface Config
    Umbrella Interface Config:
Number of interfaces with "umbrella out" config: 1
             1. GigabitEthernet1/0/48
                 Mode : OUT
                 VRF : global(Id: 0)
Number of interfaces with "umbrella in" config: 1
           .
           .
           .

    Option 2: show running-config

Alternatively, administrators can check the output of the show
running-config | include umbrella command. If that command returns at least
one line with umbrella out and at least one line with umbrella in the
Umbrella Integration is configured and the device is vulnerable.

The following example shows the output of the show running-config | include
umbrella command on a device that has the Umbrella Integration enabled:

    switch#show running-config | include umbrella
    .
    .
    .
     umbrella out
     umbrella in
    .
    .
    .
