K57542514: Python vulnerability CVE-2019-9636

Original Publication Date: 17 Sep, 2020
Latest Publication Date: 06 Jan, 2021

Security Advisory Description

Python 2.7.x through 2.7.16 and 3.x through 3.7.2 is affected by: Improper
Handling of Unicode Encoding (with an incorrect netloc) during NFKC
normalization. The impact is: Information disclosure (credentials, cookies,
etc. that are cached against a given hostname). The components are:
urllib.parse.urlsplit, urllib.parse.urlparse. The attack vector is: A specially
crafted URL could be incorrectly parsed to locate cookies or authentication
data and send that information to a different host than when parsed correctly.
(CVE-2019-9636)

Impact

A remote attacker may be able to use a specially crafted URL to locate cookies
or authentication data and send that information to a different host than when
parsed correctly.

BIG-IP Extended Application Verification (EAV) monitors using the Python
urlsplit() function with URLs from an untrusted source may be impacted by this
vulnerability.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned ID 945033 (BIG-IP) and (BIG-IQ) to this
vulnerability.

To determine if your product and version have been evaluated for this
vulnerability, refer to the Applies to (see versions) box. To determine if your

by the vulnerability, and for information about releases, point releases, or
hotfixes that address the vulnerability, refer to the following table. For more

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Fixes introduced in column. If the table lists only an older version
than what you are currently running, or does not list a non-vulnerable version,
then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

Mitigation

Do not use URLs from an untrusted source for custom EAV monitors that use the
Python urlsplit() function.
