First Published: 2019 October 2 16:00 GMT

Version 1.0: Final

Workarounds: No workarounds availableCisco Bug IDs: CSCvo45799

CVE-2019-12694

CWE-20

CVSS Score:
6.7 AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H/E:X/RL:X/RC:X

Summary

o A vulnerability in the command line interface (CLI) of Cisco Firepower
Threat Defense (FTD) Software could allow an authenticated, local attacker
with administrative privileges to execute commands on the underlying
    operating system with root privileges.

The vulnerability is due to insufficient input validation. An attacker
could exploit this vulnerability by executing a specific CLI command that
includes crafted arguments. A successful exploit could allow the attacker
to execute commands on the underlying OS with root privileges.

Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There
are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.

This advisory is available at the following link:
    https://tools.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/
    cisco-sa-20191002-ftd-cmdinj

Affected Products

  o Vulnerable Products

This vulnerability affects Cisco products if they are running a vulnerable
    release of Cisco FTD Software.

For information about which Cisco FTD Software releases are vulnerable, see
the Fixed Software section of this advisory.

    Products Confirmed Not Vulnerable

Only products listed in the Vulnerable Products section of this advisory
are known to be affected by this vulnerability.

Cisco has confirmed that this vulnerability does not affect Cisco Adaptive
Security Appliance (ASA) Software or Cisco Firepower Management Center
    (FMC) Software.

Workarounds

o There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.

Fixed Software

o When considering software upgrades , customers are advised to regularly
consult the advisories for Cisco products, which are available from the
Cisco Security Advisories and Alerts page , to determine exposure and a
    complete upgrade solution.

In all cases, customers should ensure that the devices to be upgraded
contain sufficient memory and confirm that current hardware and software
configurations will continue to be supported properly by the new release.
If the information is not clear, customers are advised to contact the Cisco
Technical Assistance Center (TAC) or their contracted maintenance
    providers.

    Fixed Releases

In the following table(s), the left column lists releases of Cisco ASA
Software, Cisco FMC Software, or Cisco FTD Software. The right column
indicates whether a release is affected by the vulnerability described in
this advisory and the first release that includes the fix for this
    vulnerability.

CVSS Score:

Summary

o Multiple vulnerabilities in the multi-instance feature of Cisco Firepower
Threat Defense (FTD) Software could allow an authenticated, local attacker
to escape the container for their FTD instance and execute commands with
root privileges in the host namespace.

These vulnerabilities are due to insufficient protections on the underlying
filesystem. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by modifying
critical files on the underlying filesystem. A successful exploit could
allow the attacker to execute commands with root privileges within the host
namespace. This could allow the attacker to impact other running FTD
    instances.

Cisco has released software updates that address these vulnerabilities.
There are no workarounds that address these vulnerabilities.

This advisory is available at the following link:
    https://tools.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/
    cisco-sa-20191002-ftd-container-esc

This advisory is part of the October 2019 Cisco ASA, FMC, and FTD Software
Security Advisory Bundled Publication, which includes 10 Cisco Security
Advisories that describe 18 vulnerabilities. For a complete list of the
advisories and links to them, see Cisco Event Response: October 2019 Cisco
ASA, FMC, and FTD Software Security Advisory Bundled Publication .

Affected Products

  o Vulnerable Products

These vulnerabilities affect the following Cisco products if they are
running a vulnerable release of Cisco FTD Software that is configured for
    multi-instance operation:

       Firepower 4100 Series Security Appliances
       Firepower 9300 Series Security Appliances

To determine whether a device is providing multi-instance services,
administrators can log in to the FXOS CLI and use the show app-instance
command within the ssa scope. If the Deploy Type field has a value of
Container , application instances are present and the device is vulnerable.
The following example shows the command output for a vulnerable device:

        firepower# scope ssa
        firepower /ssa # show app-instance
App Name Identifier Slot ID Admin State Oper State Running Version Startup Version Deploy Type Turbo Mode Profile Name Cluster State Cluster Role

    Products Confirmed Not Vulnerable

Only products listed in the Vulnerable Products section of this advisory
are known to be affected by these vulnerabilities.

Cisco has confirmed that these vulnerabilities do not affect Cisco Adaptive
Security Appliance (ASA) Software or Cisco Firepower Management Center
    (FMC) Software.

Workarounds

o There are no workarounds that address these vulnerabilities.

Fixed Software

o Cisco has released free software updates that address the vulnerabilities
described in this advisory. Customers may only install and expect support
for software versions and feature sets for which they have purchased a
license. By installing, downloading, accessing, or otherwise using such
software upgrades, customers agree to follow the terms of the Cisco
    software license:
    https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/end-user-license-agreement.html

Additionally, customers may only download software for which they have a
valid license, procured from Cisco directly, or through a Cisco authorized
reseller or partner. In most cases this will be a maintenance upgrade to
software that was previously purchased. Free security software updates do
not entitle customers to a new software license, additional software
feature sets, or major revision upgrades.

When considering software upgrades , customers are advised to regularly
consult the advisories for Cisco products, which are available from the
Cisco Security Advisories and Alerts page , to determine exposure and a
    complete upgrade solution.

In all cases, customers should ensure that the devices to be upgraded
contain sufficient memory and confirm that current hardware and software
configurations will continue to be supported properly by the new release.
If the information is not clear, customers are advised to contact the Cisco
Technical Assistance Center (TAC) or their contracted maintenance
    providers.

    Customers Without Service Contracts

Customers who purchase directly from Cisco but do not hold a Cisco service
contract and customers who make purchases through third-party vendors but
are unsuccessful in obtaining fixed software through their point of sale
should obtain upgrades by contacting the Cisco TAC:
    https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/web/tsd-cisco-worldwide-contacts.html

Customers should have the product serial number available and be prepared
to provide the URL of this advisory as evidence of entitlement to a free
    upgrade.

    Fixed Releases

In the following tables, the left column lists releases of Cisco ASA
Software, Cisco FMC Software, or Cisco FTD Software. The center column
indicates whether a release is affected by the vulnerabilities described in
this advisory and the first release that includes the fix for these
vulnerabilities. The right column indicates whether a release is affected
by any of the vulnerabilities described in this bundle and which release
    includes fixes for those vulnerabilities.

    1. Cisco FMC and FTD Software releases 6.0.1 and earlier have reached end
of software maintenance. Customers are advised to migrate to a supported
release that includes the fixes for these vulnerabilities.

To upgrade to a fixed release of Cisco FTD Software, customers can do one
    of the following:

For devices that are managed by using Cisco Firepower Management Center
(FMC), use the FMC interface to install the upgrade. After installation
is complete, reapply the access control policy.
For devices that are managed by using Cisco Firepower Device Manager
(FDM), use the FDM interface to install the upgrade. After installation
is complete, reapply the access control policy.
