Summary

POWER9: In response to an IPMI implementation error, a new Power System
firmware update is being released to address Common Vulnerabilities and
Exposures issue number CVE 2019-4169.

Vulnerability Details

CVEID: CVE-2019-4169
DESCRIPTION: IBM Open Power Firmware could allow access to BMC via IPMI using
default OpenBMC password even after BMC password was changed away from the
default password.

The firmware update can be obtained from FixCentral by specifying the Product
and fix level as specified in this Remediation section.

Affected Products and Versions

P9 OpenPOWER releases OP910 and OP920 are affected.

Remediation/Fixes

Customers with the products below running OP920, install the OP920.20

Customers with the products below running OP910, install the OP910.31

1) IBM Power System AC922 (8335-GTC)

2) IBM Power System AC922 (8335-GTG)

3) IBM Power System AC922 (8335-GTW)

Workarounds and Mitigations

Disabling IPMI local area network (LAN) access via IPMI inband commands will
mitigate the vulnerability until the fix can be applied.
Run the following IPMI inband command to disable IPMI LAN access: "ipmitool lan
set 1 access off".
Run the following IPMI inband command to reenable IPMI LAN access: "ipmitool
lan set 1 access on".
