2. RISK EVALUATION

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could cause buffer overflow
conditions that may allow information disclosure, remote code execution, or
crash the application.

3. TECHNICAL DETAILS

3.1 AFFECTED PRODUCTS

The following versions of Delta Industrial Automation CNCSoft are affected:

  o CNCSoft ScreenEditor Version 1.00.88 and prior

3.2 VULNERABILITY OVERVIEW

3.2.1 STACK-BASED BUFFER OVERFLOW CWE-121

Multiple stack-based buffer overflow vulnerabilities may be exploited by
processing specially crafted project files, allowing an attacker to remotely
execute arbitrary code. This may occur because CNCSoft lacks user input
validation before copying data from project files onto the stack.

CVE-2019-10947 has been assigned to these vulnerabilities. A CVSS v3 base score
of 7.8 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is ( AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U
/C:H/I:H/A:H ).

3.2.2 HEAP-BASED BUFFER OVERFLOW CWE-122

Multiple heap-based buffer overflow vulnerabilities may be exploited by
processing specially crafted project files, allowing an attacker to remotely
execute arbitrary code. There is a lack of user input validation before copying
data from project files onto the heap.

CVE-2019-10951 has been assigned to these vulnerabilities. A CVSS v3 base score
of 7.8 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is ( AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U
/C:H/I:H/A:H ).

3.2.3 OUT-OF-BOUNDS READ CWE-125

Multiple out-of-bounds read vulnerabilities may be exploited, allowing
information disclosure due to a lack of user input validation for processing
specially crafted project files.

CVE-2019-10949 has been assigned to these vulnerabilities. A CVSS v3 base score
of 3.3 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is ( AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U
/C:L/I:N/A:N ).

3.3 BACKGROUND

3.4 RESEARCHER

Natnael Samson (@NattiSamson) and an anonymous researcher working with Trend
Micro's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) reported these vulnerabilities to NCCIC.

4. MITIGATIONS

Delta recommends the following:

  o Update to the latest version of ScreenEditor 1.00.89. This updated version
    can be found at:

  o Restrict the interaction with the application to trusted files.

NCCIC recommends users take the following measures to protect themselves from
social engineering attacks:

  o Do not click web links or open unsolicited attachments in email messages.
  o Refer to Recognizing and Avoiding Email Scams for more information on
    avoiding email scams.
  o Refer to Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing Attacks for more
    information on social engineering attacks.

NCCIC recommends users take defensive measures to minimize the risk of
exploitation of this vulnerability. Specifically, users should:

  o Minimize network exposure for all control system devices and/or systems,
    and ensure that they are not accessible from the Internet .
  o Locate control system networks and remote devices behind firewalls, and
    isolate them from the business network.
  o When remote access is required, use secure methods, such as Virtual Private
    Networks (VPNs), recognizing that VPNs may have vulnerabilities and should
    be updated to the most current version available. Also recognize that VPN
    is only as secure as the connected devices.

NCCIC reminds organizations to perform proper impact analysis and risk
assessment prior to deploying defensive measures.

NCCIC also provides a section for control systems security recommended
practices on the ICS-CERT web page. Several recommended practices are available
for reading and download, including Improving Industrial Control Systems
Cybersecurity with Defense-in-Depth Strategies .

Additional mitigation guidance and recommended practices are publicly available

Organizations observing any suspected malicious activity should follow their
established internal procedures and report their findings to NCCIC for tracking
and correlation against other incidents.

No known public exploits specifically target these vulnerabilities. These
vulnerabilities are not exploitable remotely.
