K20934447:Linux kernel vulnerability CVE-2018-14634

Security Advisory

Original Publication Date: 23 Oct, 2018

Latest Publication Date: 10 Aug, 2019

Security Advisory Description

An integer overflow flaw was found in the Linux kernel's create_elf_tables()
function. An unprivileged local user with access to SUID (or otherwise
privileged) binary could use this flaw to escalate their privileges on the
system. Kernel versions 2.6.x, 3.10.x and 4.14.x are believed to be vulnerable.
(CVE-2018-14634)

Impact

The default, standard, and recommended configuration for the BIG-IP
configuration is to allow only root user access to the CLI. Therefore, local
privilege escalations are mitigated by default. Any unprivileged local user may
acquire elevated privileges.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned ID 745257 (BIG-IP), ID 747107 (BIG-IQ), ID
747345 (iWorkflow), CPF-24995 and CPF-24996 (Traffix), and ID 747344
(Enterprise Manager) to this vulnerability. Additionally, F5 iHealth may list
Heuristic H20934447 on the Diagnostics > Identified > Medium page.

To determine if your product and version have been evaluated for this
vulnerability, refer to the Applies to (see versions) box. To determine if your
release is known to be vulnerable, the components or features that are affected
by the vulnerability, and for information about releases or hotfixes that
address the vulnerability, refer to the following table. For more information
about security advisory versioning, refer to K51812227: Understanding Security
Advisory versioning.

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Fixes introduced in column. If the table lists only an older version
than what you are currently running, or does not list a non-vulnerable version,
then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

Mitigation

Limit access to the Advanced Shell (bash) to trusted users only.
