Security Advisory

Original Publication Date: 03 Jul, 2018

Latest Publication Date: 26 Jul, 2019

Security Advisory Description

Race condition in kernel/events/core.c in the Linux kernel before 4.9.7 allows
local users to gain privileges via a crafted application that makes concurrent
perf_event_open system calls for moving a software group into a hardware
context. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for
CVE-2016-6786. (CVE-2017-6001)

Impact

An authenticated attacker may be able to gain an escalation of privileges
through a crafted application.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned ID 726407 (BIG-IP), ID 726456 (BIG-IQ), ID
726454 (Enterprise Manager), and CPF-24921 and CPF-24922 (Traffix) to this
vulnerability. Additionally, BIG-IP iHealth may list Heuristic H24578092 on the
Diagnostics > Identified > Medium page.

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Fixes introduced in column. If the table lists only an older version
than what you are currently running, or does not list a non-vulnerable version,
then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

Mitigation

To mitigate this vulnerability for affected F5 products, you should permit
management access to F5 products only over a secure network and limit shell
access to only trusted users. For more information about securing access to
BIG-IP and Enterprise Manager systems, refer to K13309: Restricting access to
the Configuration utility by source IP address (11.x - 15.x) and K13092:
Overview of securing access to the BIG-IP system.
