K81601350: BIG-IP PEM vulnerability CVE-2017-6144

Security Advisory

Original Publication Date: Jul 13, 2017
Updated Date: Aug 18, 2017

Security Advisory Description

When downloading the Type Allocation Code (TAC) database file via HTTPS, the
server's certificate is not verified. Attackers in a privileged network
position may be able to launch a man-in-the-middle attack against these
connections. TAC databases are used in BIG-IP PEM for Device Type and OS (DTOS)
and Tethering detection. Customers not using BIG-IP PEM, not configuring
downloads of TAC database files, or not using HTTP for that download are not
affected. (CVE-2017-6144)

Impact

This vulnerability allows data tampering or unauthorized information
disclosure.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned ID 627916 (BIG-IP) to this vulnerability.
Additionally, BIG-IP iHealth may list Heuristic H81601350 on the Diagnostics >
Identified > Medium screen.

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Versions known to be not vulnerable column. If the table lists only an
older version than what you are currently running, or does not list a
non-vulnerable version, then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

Mitigation

To mitigate this issue, ensure the network used for connections between the
BIG-IP system and the TAC database host server is secure from unauthorized
intrusion.
