Security Bulletin: IBM PowerVC - Clear text passwords and access tokens found
on the PowerVC management node (CVE-2014-3093)

Security Bulletin

Document information

More support for:

PowerVC Standard Edition

Software version:

1.2.0, 1.2.1

Operating system(s):

Linux

Reference #:

N1020242

Modified date:

2014-08-25

Summary

PowerVC is exposing clear text passwords and access tokens to local users via
log and configuration files, command line arguments, and diagnostic results.

Vulnerability Details

CVE ID:

CVE-2014-3093

DESCRIPTION:

A clear text password for the powervc-validator service account was found in
the world-readable file /etc/validator/api-paste.ini

Enabling debug logging resulted in passwords and access tokens being logged in
clear text in multiple places.

Installation, environment checks, and the powervc-ldap-config and
powervc-restore CLI commands expose clear text passwords on the command line,
allowing them to be seen in the process table.

The powervc-diag CLI command prints the access token that it uses to collect
its results and logs that token as well as other tokens.

CVSS:

CVSS Base Score: 2.1

CVSS Temporal Score: See http://xforce.iss.net/xforce/xfdb/94259 for the
current score

CVSS Environmental Score*: Undefined

CVSS Vector: (AV:L/AC:L/Au:N/C:P/I:N/A:N)

Affected Products and Versions

PowerVC Express Edition 1.2.0.0 through 1.2.0.2

PowerVC Express Edition 1.2.1.0 through 1.2.1.1

PowerVC Standard Edition 1.2.0.0 through 1.2.0.2

PowerVC Standard Edition 1.2.1.0 through 1.2.1.1

Remediation/Fixes

The recommended solution is to apply the fix as soon as practical. Install
PowerVC 1.2.0 FixPack3 or PowerVC 1.2.1 FixPack2. The fixpacks are available
on IBM Fix Central.

Workarounds and Mitigations

File permissions for /etc/validator/api-paste.ini may be changed to restrict
access by running the following commands:

/bin/chown root:powervc-validator /etc/validator/api-paste.ini

/bin/chmod 640 /etc/validator/api-paste.ini

Do not enable debug logging on affected versions.

Wait 6 hours after running powervc-diag before sharing the results with an
untrusted party. This allows enough time for any access tokens recorded in the
results to expire.
