  _________________________________________________________________

Category : Security
Release Phase : Workaround
Bug Id : 6901023
Product : Solaris 10 Operating System
OpenSolaris
Date of Workaround Release : 15-Dec-2009

An integer overflow vulnerability in the GNU Image Manipulation Program ...

1. Impact

An integer overflow vulnerability in the GNU Image Manipulation
Program (GIMP(1)) may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to crash gimp
via a carefully crafted Bitmap (bmp) image file, resulting in a Denial
of Service (DoS) or to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of a
local user using gimp application.

This issue is also described in the following document:
CVE-2009-1570 at http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2009-1570

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  * Solaris 10
  * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_87 through snv_128

x86 Platform
  * Solaris 10
  * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_87 through snv_128

Note 1: Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 do not ship GIMP and are thus not
impacted by this issue.

Note 2: OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes
above and beyond the build from which it was derived. The base build can be
derived as follows:
     $ uname -a
     snv_115

3. Symptoms

Should the described issue occur, the GNU Image Manipulation Program
(GIMP(1)) may crash and potentially create a core dump depending on
the system configuration.

4. Workaround

To work around the described issue, do not load BitMap (bmp) images
from untrusted sources.

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:
SPARC Platform
  * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_129 or later

x86 Platform
  * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_129 or later

A final resolution is pending completion for Solaris 10.
