SA Document Body
Multiple Security Vulnerabilities in Firefox Versions Before 3.5.3 May Allow
Execution of Arbitrary Code, Access to Unauthorized Data, or Denial of
Service (DoS)

1. Impact

Multiple security vulnerabilities with varying impacts affect Firefox
(see firefox(1)) versions prior to 3.5.3 as shipped with OpenSolaris.
These vulnerabilities may allow an unprivileged remote user to cause a
Denial of Service (DoS) to the Firefox application or possibly execute
arbitrary code on the system where Firefox is being run. Further
vulnerabilities may allow a remote user to mislead a Firefox user into
incorrectly trusting a site by providing a URL in the location bar
which may appear to be another URL, or to compromise the cryptography
features that are active within the browser application.
The following Mozilla advisories describe the vulnerabilities:

MFSA 2009-51 at
http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/2009/mfsa2009-51.html
MFSA 2009-50 at
http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/2009/mfsa2009-50.html
MFSA 2009-49 at

MFSA 2009-48 at
http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/2009/mfsa2009-48.html
MFSA 2009-47 at
http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/2009/mfsa2009-47.html

The following are the CVE identifiers that pertain to these security
issues:

CVE-2009-3079 at
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2009-3079

2. Contributing Factors
This issue can occur in the following releases:
SPARC platform
  * OpenSolaris builds snv_95 through snv_124

x86 platform
  * OpenSolaris builds snv_95 through snv_124

Notes:

  1. The issue described in MFSA2009-48 only impacts versions of Firefox
prior to 3.5. This means that OpenSolaris builds snv_119 and later are
not impacted by the issue described in MFSA2009-48.

  2. Solaris 8 and 9 do not include Firefox and therefore are not
impacted by these issues. Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris prior to snv_95
do not ship Firefox 3.x, but the Firefox version 2.x that is included
may be impacted, in which case a separate Sun Alert describing the
resolution for Solaris 10 will be published.

  3. OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes above
and beyond the build from which it was derived. The base build can be
  derived as follows:
  $ uname -v
  snv_95

3. Symptoms

There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described
issue has occurred.

4. Workaround

Some of the bugs mentioned in MFSA 2009-47 and MFSA 2009-51 can be
worked around by disabling JavaScript until a version of these fixes
can be installed. JavaScript can be disabled with the following steps:

  1. Open the "Preferences" dialog from the Edit menu

  2. Select the "Content" tab

  3. Uncheck the "Enable JavaScript" check box

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:
SPARC Platform
  * OpenSolaris build snv_125 or later

x86 Platform
  * OpenSolaris build snv_125 or later
