K54431371: BIG-IP APM client for Linux and macOS vulnerability CVE-2018-5546

Security Advisory

Original Publication Date: Aug 17, 2018
Updated Date: Sep 06, 2018

Security Advisory Description

The svpn and policyserver components of the F5 BIG-IP APM client prior to
version 7.1.7.1 for Linux and macOS runs as a privileged process and can allow
an unprivileged user to get ownership of files owned by root on the local
client host. (CVE-2018-5546)

Impact

A malicious local unprivileged user may gain knowledge of sensitive
information, manipulate certain data, or assume super-user privileges on the
local client host.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned IDs 739090 and 739094 (BIG-IP APM and
BIG-IP APM Clients) to this vulnerability.

To determine if your product and version have been evaluated for this
vulnerability, refer to the Applies to (see versions) box. To determine if your

possible that the document may be removed without our knowledge.

^2 In BIG-IP APM 13.1.0 and later, the APM client components can be updated
independently from BIG-IP software. For more information, refer to K52547540:
Updating the BIG-IP Edge Client for the BIG-IP APM system.

^3 To update APM client components in vulnerable versions of BIG-IP Edge
Client, upgrade to a version of BIG-IP APM software listed in the Fixes
introduced in column.

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Fixes introduced in column. If the table lists only an older version
than what you are currently running, or does not list a non-vulnerable version,
then no upgrade candidate currently exists.
