K22183127: Vim vulnerability CVE-2016-1248

Security Advisory

Original Publication Date: Mar 21, 2017
Updated Date: Dec 22, 2017

Security Advisory Description

vim before patch 8.0.0056 does not properly validate values for the 'filetype',
'syntax' and 'keymap' options, which may result in the execution of arbitrary
code if a file with a specially crafted modeline is opened. (CVE-2016-1248)

Impact

A local attacker may abuse this vulnerability, by way of a crafted file, to run
arbitrary commands with privileges of the user who is using vim with the
modeline feature enabled. By default, the UID 0 is not exposed to this
vulnerability. In BIG-IP, Enterprise Manager, BIG-IQ, and iWorkflow systems,
the shell access is performed by way of UID 0, hence the vulnerability is not
exposed. However, this default setting may be overridden by way of the user
customizable .vimrc configuration file.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned ID 635314 (BIG-IP), ID 651261 (Enterprise
Manager), ID 651287 (BIG-IQ), ID 651658 (iWorkflow), and CPF-23577 (Traffix) to
this vulnerability. Additionally, BIG-IP iHealth may list Heuristic H22183127
on the Diagnostics > Identified > Low screen.

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Versions known to be not vulnerable column. If the table lists only an
older version than what you are currently running, or does not list a
non-vulnerable version, then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

Mitigation

To mitigate this vulnerability, you can disable modeline on the .vimrc
configuration file if the file has been customized in the affected systems.
