K44512851:OpenSSL vulnerability CVE-2017-3732

Security Advisory

Original Publication Date: 17 Feb, 2017

Latest Publication Date: 04 Apr, 2018

Security Advisory Description

There is a carry propagating bug in the x86_64 Montgomery squaring procedure
in OpenSSL 1.0.2 before 1.0.2k and 1.1.0 before 1.1.0d. No EC algorithms are
affected. Analysis suggests that attacks against RSA and DSA as a result of
this defect would be very difficult to perform and are not believed likely.
Attacks against DH are considered just feasible (although very difficult)
because most of the work necessary to deduce information about a private key
may be performed offline. The amount of resources required for such an attack
would be very significant and likely only accessible to a limited number of
attackers. An attacker would additionally need online access to an unpatched
system using the target private key in a scenario with persistent DH
parameters and a private key that is shared between multiple clients. For
example this can occur by default in OpenSSL DHE based SSL/TLS ciphersuites.
Note: This issue is very similar to CVE-2015-3193 but must be treated as a
separate problem. (CVE-2017-3732)

Impact

This vulnerability may allow an attacker to recover encryption keys.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned IDs 645101 (BIG-IP) to this vulnerability.
Additionally, BIG-IP iHealth may list Heuristic H44512851 on the Diagnostics >
Identified > Medium screen.

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Versions known to be not vulnerable column. If the table lists only an
older version than what you are currently running, or does not list a
non-vulnerable version, then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

Mitigation

BIG-IP

If you are using the iAppsLX feature, you should note the following:

o You can mitigate this issue by using only Elliptic Curve (EC) ciphers and
disabling Diffie-Hellman (DHE) ciphers in your environment.
o You can partially mitigate this issue by disabling DHE ciphers.

Modifying the iAppsLX (f5-rest-node) cipher list to use only EC ciphers

To modify the cipher list to use only EC ciphers, use a text editor such as vi
to add the following line to the end of the /service/restnoded/run file:

Note: The following change will persist across reboots, but will not persist
across software upgrades.

exec /usr/bin/f5-rest-node /usr/share/rest/node/src/restnode.js
- --tls-cipher-list="ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:!RC4" -p 8105 --logLevel finest
- -i ${LOG_FILE} -s none > /var/tmp/${service}.out 2>&1
