K54610514:Linux kernel vulnerability CVE-2016-10088

Security Advisory

Original Publication Date: 28 Jan, 2017

Latest Publication Date: 24 Mar, 2018

Security Advisory Description

The sg implementation in the Linux kernel through 4.9 does not properly
restrict write operations in situations where the KERNEL_DS option is set,
which allows local users to read or write to arbitrary kernel memory locations
or cause a denial of service (use-after-free) by leveraging access to a /dev/sg
device, related to block/bsg.c and drivers/scsi/sg.c. NOTE: this vulnerability
exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2016-9576. (CVE-2016-10088)

Impact

This vulnerability may allow locally authenticated users to read or write to
arbitrary kernel memory locations or cause a denial of service (DoS).

Note: The exploit requires local shell access and can provide a user with root
access to the system. On BIG-IP systems, shell access includes root privileges,
making this exploit unnecessary.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned IDs 640766 and 640768 (BIG-IP) and IDs
640766 and 640768 (BIG-IQ, Enterprise Manager, and iWorkflow) to this
vulnerability. Additionally, BIG-IP iHealth may list Heuristic H54610514 on the
Diagnostics > Identified > Low screen.

To determine if your release is known to be vulnerable, the components or
features that are affected by the vulnerability, and for information about
releases or hotfixes that address the vulnerability, refer to the following

Security Advisory Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Versions known to be not vulnerable column. If the table lists only an
older version than what you are currently running, or does not list a
non-vulnerable version, then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

To determine the necessary upgrade path for your BIG-IQ system, you should
understand the BIG-IQ product offering name changes. For more information,
refer to K21232150: Considerations for upgrading BIG-IQ or F5 iWorkflow systems

K90803619:Linux kernel vulnerability CVE-2016-6136

Security Advisory

Original Publication Date: 28 Mar, 2017

Latest Publication Date: 04 Apr, 2018

Security Advisory Description

Race condition in the audit_log_single_execve_arg function in kernel/auditsc.c
in the Linux kernel through 4.7 allows local users to bypass intended
character-set restrictions or disrupt system-call auditing by changing a
certain string, aka a "double fetch" vulnerability. (CVE-2016-6136)

Impact

Locally authenticated users may be able to bypass audit restrictions resulting
in the disclosure of local information.

Security Advisory Status

F5 Product Development has assigned IDs 648879 and 653065 (BIG-IP), ID 652525
(BIG-IQ), ID 652524 (Enterprise Manager), and ID 456789 (ARX) to this
vulnerability. Additionally, BIG-IP iHealth may list Heuristic H90803619 on the
Diagnostics > Identified > Medium page.

For more information,
refer to K21232150: Considerations for upgrading BIG-IQ or F5 iWorkflow systems
.

Mitigation

To mitigate this vulnerability, you should permit management access to F5
products only over a secure network and limit shell access to only trusted
users. For more information, refer to K13309: Restricting access to the
Configuration utility by source IP address (11.x - 13.x) and K13092: Overview
of securing access to the BIG-IP system.
