May 9 2008: Initial Release
OVERVIEW
Microsoft has released the third service pack for Windows XP. The
release brings with it all previously released security updates,
hotfixes and other miscellaneous updates. It also includes some new
enhancements which will leverage new features available in Windows
Server 2008.
DETAILS
Service Pack Three does not include Windows Internet Explorer 7,
however it does include updates to both Internet Explorer 7 and
Internet Explorer 6. Users who are running Internet Explorer 8 Beta
are required to uninstall before installing the service pack.
Previously released functionality enhancements included in the service
pack include:
* Microsoft Management Console 3.0
* Microsoft XML 6
* Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 V2 (3.1.4000.2435)
* Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.5
* IPSec Simple Policy Update for Windows
* Digital Identity Mangement Service
* Pern Name resolution Protocol (PNRP) 2.1
* Remote Desktop Protocol 6.1
* WiFi Protected Access 2 (WPA2)
New functionality which is added in the service pack includes:
* "Black Hole" Router Detection
* Network Access Protection (NAP)
* CredSSP Security Service Provider
* Descriptive Security Options User Interface
* Enhanced security for Administrator and Service policy entries
* Microsoft Cryptographic Module
* Windows Product Activation
Some interesting things to note are the Network Access Protection and
the updated Cryptographic module. NAP, which is a policy driven
technology, enforces computers that are connecting to your network
are in optimal health by segregating them to only access certain
resources until they become compliant with the policies.
In addition the new cryptographic module now supports SHA2 (SHA256,
SHA384, SHA512) in X.509 certificates. The crypto modules are now
compliant with FIPS 140-2 which supersedes the FIPS 140-1 that was
implemented in XP SP2.
