1 May 2008
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
AusCERT Advisory Summary
------------------------
Product: Zune ActiveX control
Operating System: Windows
Impact: Modify Arbitrary Files
Access: Remote/Unauthenticated
Member content until: Wednesday, May 28 2008
Revision History: May 1 2008: Corrected bulletin ID
April 30 2008: Initial Release
OVERVIEW:
A vulnerability has been identified in the Zune Software ActiveX
control which allows arbitrary file modification.
IMPACT:
If a user visits a malicious web page, the attacker can overwrite an
arbitrary file.
MITIGATION:
AusCERT recommends following the guidelines from our "Protecting
your computer from malicious code" [2], and exercising caution when
visiting untrusted web sites. It can be further mitigated by having
appropriate ACLs in place.
The 'kill bit' can also be set for the Zune ActiveX control to
prevent Internet Explorer from initialising the ActiveX control.
The CLSID for Zune ActiveX is:
{0B1C3B47-207F-4CEA-8F31-34E4DB2F6EFD}
More information on setting the kill bit for ActiveX controls can be
found in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 240797 [3].
