Adobe Security Advisory APSA07-06
Vulnerabilities in some SWF files could allow cross-site scripting

Release date: December 23, 2007

Vulnerability identifier: APSA07-06

Summary
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adobe is aware of the content related to potential cross-site scripting (XSS)
vulnerabilities in SWF files as described in an upcoming book discussing
methods malicious attackers can use to take advantage of inadequately coded
SWF files. According to the book, several applications that can be used to
create SWF content are currently deployed with pre-generated SWF files,
which may contain XSS vulnerabilities. The Adobe applications described
include Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 and Adobe Acrobat Connect.

XSS vulnerabilities are exploited when attackers lure users into clicking
malicious links sent via email or on a Web page. If a customer is logged into
an account on a Web site, and then clicks on a malicious SWF link, the
attacker could gain access to the customer's session by appending script to
the link.

An update to Flash Player in early 2008 will be made available to protect
users from the potential XSS vulnerability as described above.

Preventative Measures for Developers and Website Owners
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The update to Flash Player coming out in early 2008 will address the XSS
issues in SWFs. Prior to this Adobe will be releasing an update for
pre-generated SWF files in Adobe software that includes XSS prevention in
January 2008. In addition, Adobe strongly recommends Flash content creators
utilize the data validation libraries found here:
http://code.google.com/p/flash-validators/ to help prevent XSS vulnerabilities
in their own custom SWFs, as well as follow the guidelines of the Adobe
whitepaper Creating More Secure SWF Web Applications.

Preventative Measures for End-Users
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The latest Adobe Flash Player update, as described in the 12/18 Adobe Security
Bulletin offers a solution for one of the issues outlined in the book, related
to the unsupported asfunction protocol. Adobe recommends end users update to
the latest release of Flash Player as described in the bulletin. The update
being released in early 2008 will mitigate the issue further.

A security bulletin will be published on http://www.adobe.com/support/security
as soon as the product updates are available.

All documented security vulnerabilities and their solutions are distributed
through the Adobe security notification service. You can sign up for the
service at the following URL:

Severity Rating
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adobe categorizes this as an important issue and recommends that developers
review the security resources available on Adobe Developer Connection
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/security.html, and as always, that
users exercise caution when receiving unsolicited e-mail communications
requesting user action or clicking Web links.
