16 November 2007
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
AusCERT Advisory Summary
------------------------
Product: PHP versions 5.2.4 and prior
Operating System: UNIX variants (UNIX, Linux, OSX)
Windows
Impact: Execute Arbitrary Code/Commands
Inappropriate Access
Denial of Service
Access: Remote/Unauthenticated
Member content until: Friday, December 14 2007
OVERVIEW:
PHP 5.2.5 has been released fixing several vulnerabilities
which could result in the bypass of security restrictions,
execution of arbitrary code and denial of service [1].
IMPACT:
The release notes mention the following security issues:
o User supplied arguments to the 'dl()' function could
lead to the bypass of security restrictions.
o The 'htmlentities' and 'htmlspecialchars' functions were
accepting partial multibyte sequences which could lead to
the bypass of security restrictions.
o Buffer overflow conditions inside the glibc implementations
of the 'fnmatch()', 'setlocale()' and 'glob()' functions
could lead to the execution of arbitrary code.
o An error when handling .htaccess files could enable attackers
to modify the 'mail.force_extra_parameters' php.ini directive
which could lead to the bypass of security restrictions.
o An unspecified error exists when the automatic session id
insertion adds sessions id to non-local forms.
o Values set with php_admin_* in httpd.conf could be overwritten
with the 'ini_set()' function.
MITIGATION:
Upgrade to PHP release 5.2.5 [2].
