The information in the following Security Bulletin should be acted upon
as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will not be liable for any
consequences to any customer resulting from customer's failure to fully
implement instructions in this Security Bulletin as soon as possible.

PROBLEM: shutdown(1M) improperly handles input variables.
PLATFORM: HP-9000 Series700/800 running HP-UX releases 11.X and 10.X.
DAMAGE: Increase of privileges.
SOLUTION: Apply the appropriate patches noted below.

A. Background
The shutdown command did not properly handle its inputs.
B. Fixing the problem
This problem can be eliminated by installing the following patch,
which now allows the command to function properly.
For HP-UX release 11.00, obtain and apply PHCO_21534;
for HP-UX release 10.20 and 10.10, obtain and apply PHCO_21574.
For HP-UX VirtualVault (VVOS) release 11.04, use PHCO_21567;
for HP-UX VirtualVault (VVOS) release 10.24, use PHCO_21566.
Note: No system reboot will be required.
C. To subscribe to automatically receive future NEW HP Security

do the following:
Use your browser to get to the HP IT Resource Center page
at: http://itrc.hp.com
Under the heading "Maintenance and Support" click on the link
"More..." and at the very bottom of that next page, click on
"Support Information Digests" underneath the heading NOTIFICATIONS.
Now login on the IT Resource Center Welcome page, using your user
ID and password (or register for one). You will need to login
in order to gain access to many areas of the ITRC. Remember to
save the User ID assigned to you, and your password.
