AUSCERT External Security Bulletin Redistribution
ESB-2000.032 -- Microsoft Security Bulletin (MS00-011)
Patch Available for "VM File Reading" Vulnerability
21 February 2000
===========================================================================
Microsoft Corporation has released the following security bulletin
concerning in the Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM) in Internet
Explorer 4.x and Internet Explorer 5.x under Windows 9x and Windows NT.
There exists a vulnerability in the implementation of the Java "sandbox"
environment. The "sandbox" normally prevents Java applets from accessing
resources outside the virtual environment of the Java Machine in a web
browser on a visiting machine.
This vulnerability may enable a malicious web site operator to read files
from the computer of a person who visited their site or read web content
from inside an intranet if the malicious site is visited by a computer
from within that intranet.
Microsoft have made a patch available which may eliminate this problem:
