AusCERT Update AU-2006.0035 - [Win][UNIX/Linux][OSX]
Unconfirmed vulnerabilities in Mozilla JavaScript engine may allow remote
execution of arbitrary code
3 October 2006
AusCERT Update Summary
----------------------
Product: Mozilla JavaScript Engine
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Thunderbird
Mozilla SeaMonkey
Operating System: Windows
UNIX variants (UNIX, Linux, OSX)
Impact: Execute Arbitrary Code/Commands
Access: Remote/Unauthenticated
There have been reports [1][2][3][4] of the possibility of multiple
vulnerabilities in Mozilla's JavaScript engine used in products such as
Firefox.
At this time AusCERT has not confirmed these vulnerabilities, and exact
impacts are unknown. However it is believed that they may allow a remote
attacker to execute arbitrary code on a victim's machine if they are able
to entice the victim to a specially crafted website.
Disabling JavaScript within Firefox and other Mozilla products may mitigate
against these vulnerabilities. Users of Firefox are recommended to disable
JavaScript, or to use the NoScript Firefox extension [5] and only enable
JavaScript on trusted sites.
AusCERT will continue to monitor the situation and release additional updates
when more information becomes available.
