Original Bulletin:

Microsoft has released a bulletin regarding the recent buffer overflow
vulnerability in Word. While a patch has not yet been released, one
important piece of information within the bulletin is that Word Viewer
2003 is not vulnerable and can be used to view (although not edit) Word
files relatively safely.

Word Viewer 2003 is free and available at:

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/919637.mspx

It is also possible to use Word's Safe Mode to avoid this vulnerability.
Information on enabling and using Safe Mode can be found within the
Microsoft bulletin.
