IMPACT:

Once a computer is infected with W32.Blackmal.E@mm, it will begin
sending out email in an attempt to self propagate. It obtains
target email addresses from files with an extension of: .htm,
.dbx,.eml, .msg, .oft, .nws, .vcf, .mbx, .imh, .txt, .msf.

The virus will also perform the following:

                - Add a key to the registry to enable it at startup:
                  HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
                  "ScanRegistry" = "%System%\scanregw.exe"

                - Attempt to disable anti-virus software.

                - Creates copies of itself in shared directories (ADMIN$
and C$) with the name WINZIP_TMP.exe.

                - Contact the website: webstats.web.rcn.net

MITIGATION:

System Administrators should update their antivirus programs to the
latest definitions. Users should ensure that they do not open email
attachments they are not expecting or that have extensions such as
those listed above. Unknown executable files found in shared
        directories should not be run.

Removal tools for W32.Blackmal.E@mm are available from anti-virus
vendors. AusCERT encourages administrators to visit their
appropriate anti-virus vendor's web site (see REFERENCES below)
        for additional information.
