2 December 2005
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
AusCERT Advisory Summary
------------------------
Product: Symantec pcAnywhere 11.5.1 and prior
Operating System: Windows

Original Bulletin:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/security/Content/2005.11.29.html
OVERVIEW:
Symantec have released a patch[1] for a vulnerability pcAnywhere[2]
which may be exploited by a remote attacker to cause a denial of service
attack.
While this vulnerability exists in all 32 bit versions of pcAnywhere,
Symantec have released patches for versions 11.5.1 and 11.0.1 only.
IMPACT:
A remote unauthenticated attacker may be able to cause the Symantec
pcAnywhere to crash, preventing legitimate users from accessing the
remote system.
MITIGATION:
Administrators should apply the patch referenced in [1]. Administrators
running versions of pcAnywhere for which a patch has not been supplied
should consider implementing IP based restrictions, such as firewall
or router rules to allow connections only from trusted hosts.
Information about the default ports used by Symantec pcAnywhere can be
found in [3].
