AA-2005.0026 AUSCERT Advisory
Opera 8.51 release fixes two vulnerabilities
23 November 2005
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
AusCERT Advisory Summary
------------------------
Product: Opera for Desktop 8.50 and prior
Operating System: Windows
UNIX variants
Impact: Execute Arbitrary Code/Commands
Access: Remote/Unauthenticated
CVE Names: CVE-2005-2628 CVE-2005-3591
Member-only until: Wednesday, December 21 2005
Ref: ESB-2005.0894
OVERVIEW:
Opera 8.51 has been released fixing two vulnerabilities:
1. Opera prior to version 8.51 shipped with a vulnerable version of
Macromedia flash player.[1] This vulnerability is described in
AusCERT ESB-2005.0894.[2]
2. Linux/UNIX platforms only: The wrapper script used by external
applications to invoke Opera can be made to execute arbitrary
commands embedded with backtick characters in a link URL.[3]
IMPACT:
1. When a user visits a malicious web page, a remote attacker can
execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running
Opera.
2. Where an external application is configured to use Opera as its
default browser, a user clicking on a malicious link in the
external application will allow a remote attacker to execute
arbitrary commands with the privileges of that user.
MITIGATION:
Opera 8.51 has now been released fixing these vulnerabilities.
It is available at http://www.opera.com/download/
