PROBLEM:
Microsoft have acknowledged a possible security issue in WINS (Windows
Internet Naming Service) which may allow the remote execution of code.
PLATFORM:
This vulnerability affects Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server, Microsoft
Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition, Windows 2000 Server,
and Windows Server 2003. WINS is not present in default installations
of Windows.
IMPACT:
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could make it possible
for an attacker to take control of a WINS server remotely.
MITIGATION:
Microsoft has not yet released patches for this vulnerability, but has
published the following mitigation strategies:
o Block external access via TCP port 42 and UDP port 42.
o Remove WINS, if it is not needed.
o Use IPSec communication to help secure traffic between WINS Server
Replication Partners.
