                       AL-2004.025 -- AUSCERT ALERT
XV Image Viewer - Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities
                              26 August 2004

===========================================================================

        AusCERT Alert Summary
        ---------------------

Product: XV versions 3.10a and prior
Operating System: UNIX variants
                        Linux variants
Impact: Execute Arbitrary Code/Commands
Access: Remote/Unauthenticated

- --------------------------BEGIN INCLUDED TEXT--------------------

PROBLEM:

XV is an image viewer and image manipulation program for UNIX-like
	operating systems.

Multiple stack and heap buffer overflows have been identified in XV
that allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code as the user
	running XV.

VERSIONS:

XV versions 3.10a and prior are vulnerable.

IMPACT:

This vulnerability can be used by a remote attacker to execute
arbitrary code as the user running XV. Using XV to view a specially
crafted image file can trigger the vulnerability.

AusCERT advises that working exploits for this vulnerability are
	publicly available.

MITIGATION:

No patch is currently available to fix this vulnerability.
AusCERT recommends that administrators use a different application to
replace XV until a patch is available.
