Vulnerabilities in OpenSSL
DETAIL DESCRIPTION:
Sun(sm) Alert Notification
* Sun Alert ID: 57444
* Synopsis: Sun Grid Engine 5.3 Software May Experience Security
Vulnerabilities in OpenSSL
* Category: Security
* Product: Sun Grid Engine
* BugIDs: 4957760
* Avoidance: Patch
* State: Resolved
* Date Released: 22-Dec-2003
* Date Closed: 22-Dec-2003
* Date Modified:
1. Impact
Sun Linux systems and Solaris 8 and 9 systems which run Sun Grid
Engine (SGE) 5.3 software may be vulnerable to Denial of Service
attacks, service interruptions, and in some cases a local or remote
unprivileged user may be able to execute arbitrary code with the
privileges of the OpenSSL process, typically root, due to security
vulnerabilities found in OpenSSL.
OpenSSL is an open source toolkit that implements Secure Sockets Layer
(SSL v2/v3) and Transport Layer Security (TLS v1) protocols, as well
as a general purpose cryptography library.
There are multiple vulnerabilities in OpenSSL versions prior to 0.9.7c
and 0.9.6k, as described in the following CERT Vulnerabilities:
* VU#935264 (see [1]http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/935264)
* VU#255484 (see [2]http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/255484)
* VU#380864 (see [3]http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/380864)
* VU#686224 (see [4]http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/686224)
* VU#732952 (see [5]http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/732952)
* VU#104280 (see [6]http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/104280)
which are referenced in CERT Advisory CA-2003-26 at:
[7]http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2003-26.html
2. Contributing Factors
This issue can occur in the following releases:
SPARC Platform
* Sun Grid Engine 5.3 (32-bit Solaris) without patch 113139-05
* Sun Grid Engine 5.3 (64-bit Solaris) without patch 113140-05
* Sun Grid Engine 5.3 (32-bit Solaris) NON-Solaris Package format
without patch 113855-04
* Sun Grid Engine 5.3 (64-bit Solaris) NON-Solaris Package format
without patch 113856-04
x86 Platform
* Sun Grid Engine 5.3 without patch 116658-01
* Sun Grid Engine 5.3 NON-Solaris Package format without patch
116659-01
Sun Linux Platform
* Sun Grid Engine 5.3 without patch 113900-03
To determine the version of Sun Grid Engine, run the following
command:
$ <SGE_ROOT>/bin/<architecture>/sge_commd -V
where <architecture> is either "solaris" or "solaris64" as in the
following example:
$ <SGE_ROOT>/bin/solaris64/sge_commd -V
SGE 5.3p4
To determine the OpenSSL package version, run the following command:
$ <SGE_ROOT>/utilbin/solaris64/openssl version
OpenSSL 0.9.7a Feb 19 200
3. Symptoms
There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the above
described issues have been exploited.
SOLUTION SUMMARY:
4. Relief/Workaround
There is no workaround. Please see the "Resolution" section below.
5. Resolution
