SYNOPSIS: PC Netlink's Access Control List Permissions May be Lost
After Restore of a Backup
DETAIL DESCRIPTION:
Sun(sm) Alert Notification
* Sun Alert ID: 27807
* Synopsis: PC Netlink's Access Control List Permissions May be Lost
After Restore of a Backup
* Category: Security, Data Loss
* Product: PC Netlink
* BugIDs: None
* Avoidance: Upgrade, Workaround
* State: Resolved
* Date Released: 07-Sep-2001
* Date Closed: 01-Dec-2003
* Date Modified: 01-Dec-2003
1. Impact
Backing up and later restoring "PC Netlink" shared files or
directories may cause PC Netlink Access Control List (ACL) information
to get lost. As a result, access restrictions might get lost for files
or directories accessed by PC clients through PC Netlink.
2. Contributing Factors
This issue can occur in the following releases:
SPARC
* PC Netlink 1.x
Intel
* PC Netlink 1.x
Only PC Netlink shared files and directories are affected that have
been backed up and restored using VERITAS NetBackup, Legato NetWorker
Server, Client, and Storage Node software, Solstice Backup, or other
backup products that support the handling of PC Netlink ACLs on the
server.
Backup software that accesses files and directories through the PC
Netlink shares (typically backup software running on PC Clients or PC
Servers) is not affected by the described issue.
The described issue only affects UNIX files and directories within a
PC Netlink share that
* are a symbolic link, or
* lie one or more levels below a symbolically linked directory, or
* lie on a share that itself is a symbolically linked directory.
To check if a file or directory is a symbolic link, use the Solaris
"ls -l" command (please see the "ls" man page for more details).
To check if any PC Netlink shares itself are symbolically linked
directories, use the "/opt/lanman/sbin/net share" command to list all
PC Netlink shares:
# /opt/lanman/sbin/net share
Share name Resource Remark
--------------------------------------------------------------
IPC$ IPC Share
C$ C:\ Root Share
SCOTT$ C:\export\home\scott Scott's Directory
then check each shared "Resource" for being a symbolically linked UNIX
directory. Every "Resource" relates to a UNIX directory named after
the "Resource", but without the starting "C:" and with all backslashes
("\") replaced by slashes ("/"), e.g. "C:\export\home\scott" relates
to the UNIX directory "/export/home/scott", which may or may not be a
symbolic link.
3. Symptoms
After restore operations, PC Netlink ACL permissions of files or
directories are lost (i.e. are set to the default permissions).
ACL permissions may be checked on the PC Clients or by using the
"/opt/lanman/sbin/lsacl" command on the PC Netlink server.
SOLUTION SUMMARY:
4. Relief/Workaround
As a possible workaround, should a PC Netlink shared file or directory
be a symbolic link, always backup and later restore it together with
the file or directory that the symbolic link points to (please check
your backup product's documentation for more information).
Also, a full backup and later restore of all PC Netlink shared files,
including symbolic links and the files or directories the symbolic
links point to, together with the ACL database (held in
"/var/opt/lanman/datafiles"), will not encounter the described issue.
Using backup software that accesses files and directories through the
PC Netlink shares (typically backup software running on PC Clients or
PC Servers) will also avoid the described issue.
Alternatively, do not use symbolically linked files or directories
within PC Netlink shares to avoid the described issue.
Should permissions have been lost due to the described issue, they
need to be restored either
* by directly restoring the complete ACL database (held in
"/var/opt/lanman/datafiles") on the PC Netlink server from a
backup copy, or
* by manually readjusting permissions using the "net perms" and
"chacl" commands (please see the PC Netlink documentation for more
details)
5. Resolution
This issue is addressed in PC Netlink 2.x (available at
