SSRT3588 - (Tru64) A Potential Security Vulnerability With ssh
- - -----------------------------------------------------------
NOTICE: There are no restrictions for distribution of this
Bulletin provided that it remains complete and intact.

RELEASE DATE: 25 August 2003

SEVERITY: 1

SOURCE: HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY
Software Security Response Team

REFERENCE: None

PROBLEM SUMMARY
A potential security vulnerability may exist where HP Tru64
UNIX running ssh could allow local or remote users to gain
unauthorized privileged access because ssh (Secure Shell)
incorrectly handled RSA signatures when using digital
certificates and RSA keys.

VERSIONS IMPACTED
HP Tru64 UNIX 5.1B PK2 (BL22)

HP Tru64 UNIX 5.1A (all Base Levels)

RESOLUTION
HP Tru64 UNIX 5.1A
An updated version of ssh containing the corrections for this
potential security vulnerability is available for download for
Tru64 UNIX 5.1A systems, from the following location:

http://h30097.www3.hp.com/unix/ssh/index.html

HP Tru64 UNIX 5.1B
The correction for Tru64 UNIX 5.1B will be available in the
next aggregate patch kit , 5.1B PK3. Until the next aggregate
patch kit for 5.1B is available, HP recommends using the DSA
algorithm workaround as outlined below.

HP recommends using the DSA algorithm rather than the RSA
algorithm until such time the vulnerability is corrected.

The workaround for 5.1B is to use DSA, the default public key
algorithm, and other user authentication methods that are not
affected by the potential vulnerability.

To choose the DSA algorithm rather than the RSA algorithm when
generating host or client key pairs, either specify the
"-t dsa" or, since DSA is the default, just don't specify the
- - -t option at all.

Example for explicitly specifying DSA:

# ssh-keygen2 -t dsa
