-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- =========================================================================== AUSCERT External Security Bulletin Redistribution ESB-2003.0332 -- Debian Security Advisory DSA 295-1 New pptpd packages fix remote root exploit 01 May 2003 =========================================================================== AusCERT Security Bulletin Summary --------------------------------- Product: pptpd Publisher: Debian Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 Linux Impact: Root Compromise Execute Arbitrary Code/Commands Access Required: Remote CVE Names: CAN-2003-0213 - --------------------------BEGIN INCLUDED TEXT-------------------- - -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 - - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Debian Security Advisory DSA 295-1 security@debian.org http://www.debian.org/security/ Martin Schulze April 30th, 2003 http://www.debian.org/security/faq - - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Package : pptpd Vulnerability : buffer overflow Problem-Type : remote Debian-specific: no CVE Id : CAN-2003-0213 Timo Sirainen discovered a vulnerability in pptpd, a Point to Point Tunneling Server, which implements PPTP-over-IPSEC and is commonly used to create Virtual Private Networks (VPN). By specifying a small packet length an attacker is able to overflow a buffer and execute code under the user id that runs pptpd, probably root. An exploit for this problem is already circulating. For the stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed in version 1.1.2-1.4. For the old stable distribution (potato) this problem has been fixed in version 1.0.0-4.2. For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in version 1.1.4-0.b3.2. We recommend that you upgrade your pptpd package immediately. Upgrade Instructions - - -------------------- wget url will fetch the file for you dpkg -i file.deb will install the referenced file. If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for sources.list as given below: apt-get update will update the internal database apt-get upgrade will install corrected packages You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the footer to the proper configuration.
