PROBLEM:  Potential filesystem mismangement in sort(1)

IMPACT:   Potential unauthorized access, denial of service.

PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX releases 10.XX,
          11.00, and 11.11 only.

SOLUTION: Apply the appropriate patch as listed below:
                 PHCO_25918 for HP-UX 11.11
                 PHCO_27565 for HP-UX 11.00
                 PHCO_28467 for HP-UX 11.04
                 PHCO_27564 for HP-UX 10.20
                 PHCO_27940 for HP-UX 10.10
                 PHCO_28142 for HP-UX 10.01

AVAILABILITY:  The patches are available now on <itrc.hp.com>.

 A. Background
    Certain aspects of file handling are incorrect in sort(1).

 B. Recommended solution
    Retrieve and install the appropriate patch:
          PHCO_25918 for HP-UX 11.11
          PHCO_27565 for HP-UX 11.00
          PHCO_28467 for HP-UX 11.04
          PHCO_27564 for HP-UX 10.20
          PHCO_27940 for HP-UX 10.10
          PHCO_28142 for HP-UX 10.01

    The problem is fixed in HP-UX release 11.22.

 C. To subscribe to automatically receive future NEW HP Security

    Use your browser to get to the HP IT Resource Center page

    Use the 'Login' tab at the left side of the screen to login
    using your ID and password.  Use your existing login or the

    In the left most frame select "Maintenance and Support".

    Under the "Notifications" section (near the bottom of

    for the appropriate digest and then click the "Update
    Subscriptions" button at the bottom of the page.

    To -gain access- to the Security Patch Matrix, select
    the link for "The Security Bulletins Archive".  (near the
    bottom of the page)  Once in the archive the third link is
    to the current Security Patch Matrix. Updated daily, this
    matrix categorizes security patches by platform/OS release,
    and by bulletin topic.  Security Patch Check completely
    automates the process of reviewing the patch matrix for
    11.XX systems.
