IMPACT: The potential vulnerability may allow authorized users
        to execute unauthorized programs.

PLATFORM: HP 9000 Series 700 and 800 running HP-UX 11.00,
- -->>      11.11, 11.22 running sendmail version 8.11.1 ONLY.

SOLUTION: Until patches are available download and install
          fixed versions of /usr/sbin/smrsh from the ftp
          site.

MANUAL ACTIONS: Yes - NonUpdate
                Download and install fixed versions of
                /usr/sbin/smrsh from the ftp site.

AVAILABILITY: This bulletin will be revised when patches
               are available.

CHANGE SUMMARY: Revision 01 - Only sendmail version 8.11.1
                              is vulnerable.
 ------------------------------------------------------------------
 **REVISED 01**
 A. Background
    Sendmail Restricted Shell (smrsh) may let local users
- -->>bypass restrictions to execute code. The only vulnerable
- -->>version delivered on HP-UX is sendmail 8.11.1. This version
- -->>is available as a web upgrade for HP-UX 11.00 and 11.11.
- -->>Sendmail version 8.11.1 is delivered with HP-UX 11.22.

- -->> If "what /usr/bin/smrsh" returns the following:
- -->>
- -->>   /usr/sbin/smrsh:
- -->>           smrsh.c 8.31.4.5 (Berkeley) 2001/07/16
- -->>
- -->>smrsh must be replaced as indicated in Section B (below).

    HP Tru64 UNIX is not vulnerable to this reported problem.

 B. Recommended solution

    Download the appropriate files from:

     System:    hprc.external.hp.com  (192.170.19.51)
     Login:     smrsh
     Password:  smrsh1

    FTP Access: ftp://smrsh:smrsh1@hprc.external.hp.com/
            or: ftp://smrsh:smrsh1@192.170.19.51/

      Note: There is an ftp defect in IE5 that may result in
            a browser hang. To work around this:
      - Select Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced
      - Un-check the option: [ ] Enable folder view for FTP sites.

     The files are:

 **REVISED 01**
- -->> smrsh.1100
     smrsh.1111
     smrsh.1122

     cksum 3401290743 20480 smrsh.1100
     cksum 3416816647 16384 smrsh.1111
     cksum 3349307890 16020 smrsh.1122

     If you wish to verify the md5 sums please refer to:

               HPSBUX9408-016
               Patch sums and the MD5 program

     MD5 (smrsh.1100) = 729434fce224e59351f8ef0d84123c3b
     MD5 (smrsh.1111) = bfd0585d4b11053792d202c1201ac60b
     MD5 (smrsh.1122) = d4e75fd3dfbc130924c2ff0e22e92d46

     Copy the appropriate files to a secure directory,
     for example /.  Then:

 **REVISED 01**
- -->> If the following command returns nothing smrsh is not
- -->> enabled. In that case the sendmail daemon does not
- -->> need to be stopped and restarted.
- -->>
- -->> /usr/sbin/sendmail -d0.15 nobody < /dev/null | grep smrsh
- -->>
- -->> If smrsh is enabled stop the sendmail daemon by executing
- -->> the following command:
- -->>       /sbin/init.d/sendmail stop
- -->> Restart the sendmail daemon after replacing smrsh.
- -->> Mail services for receiving mail will be unavailable
- -->> until the sendmail daemon has been restarted.

      cd /usr/sbin
      mv smrsh smrsh.orig

 **REVISED 01**
- -->>  cp /smsrh.1100 smrsh  # 11.00
        or
      cp /smsrh.1111 smrsh  # 11.11
        or
      cp /smsrh.1122 smrsh  # 11.22

      chmod 511 smrsh
      chown bin:bin smrsh

 **REVISED 01**
- -->> Restart the sendmail daemon if necessary by executing the
- -->> following command:
- -->>      /sbin/init.d/sendmail start
