Cisco NX-OS FCIP Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability

Threat Type: CWE-119: Buffer Errors
IntelliShield ID:	26617
Version: 1
First Published:	August 10, 2012 05:30 PM EDT
Last Published: August 10, 2012 05:30 PM EDT
Port: Not Available
CVE: CVE-2012-1340
BugTraq ID: 54843

Urgency: Unlikely Use
Credibility: Confirmed
Severity: Mild Damage

Version Summary:
Cisco NX-OS contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated,
remote attacker to cause a denial of service condition on a targeted device.
Updates are available.

Description
Cisco NX-OS contains a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated,
remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on a targeted
device.

The vulnerability is due to improper processing of certain packets by the
affected devices. An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this
vulnerability by sending malicious packets to the device. Processing the
packets could cause a DoS condition on a targeted device.

Cisco has confirmed this vulnerability and has released updated software.

Warning Indicators
Cisco NX-OS versions 4.2 and 5.2 are vulnerable when they are running on Cisco
MDS 9000 Series devices.

IntelliShield Analysis
A successful exploit could allow an attacker to cause the vulnerable device to
reload, potentially preventing authorized users from accessing network
resources served by the targeted device.

In typical network configuration, such devices are placed behind a firewall. To
achieve the objective, an attacker would need access to an internal network to
send crafted packets to a vulnerable device. This access requirement could
limit the possibility of a successful exploit.

Vendor Announcements
Cisco has issued release notes for Cisco bug ID CSCtn93151 at the following
link: Cisco MDS NX-OS Release 5.2(2)

Impact
An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause a
targeted device to reload a certain module, resulting in a DoS condition.

Technical Information
The vulnerability is due to improper processing of certain Fibre Channel over
IP (FCIP) headers by the affected Cisco NX-OS versions running on MDS 9000
series devices.

An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending
crafted FCIP headers to the device. Processing of the packets could cause a
device to reload the affected module, leading to DoS condition on the device.

Safeguards
Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to implement an intrusion prevention system (IPS) or
intrusion detection system (IDS) to help detect and prevent attacks that
attempt to exploit this vulnerability.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.

Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.

Patches/Software
Cisco customers with active contracts can obtain updates through the Software
Center at the following link: Cisco. Cisco customers without contracts can
obtain upgrades by contacting the Cisco Technical Assistance Center at
