OVERVIEW
An email targeting Australian citizens is circulating using the
recent refugee boating tragedy as the hook. The email spoofs the
from address and claims it is from news.com.au.
IMPACT
If the link in the email is clicked, the website will install malware
without any user interaction.
MITIGATION
Ensure that the Operating Systems have the latest software installed
and that Java is up-to-date.
This will prevent the exploit from working and therefore the end-user
will not become infected.
At your proxies block the following domain:
3ddr.co.cc
which currently resolves to:
195.80.151.91
You can also check for compromised systems by checking your proxies.
The malware if installed does a DNS request for:
rmtrrozssjvtuiwe.info
which currently resolves to
193.178.172.77
DETAILS
The email spoofs the from address to be from news.com.au and
contains a subject line similar to:
"More childrens' lives being put ar risk in dangerous bid for freedom by boat"
The site in the email exploits the following vulnerabilities:
* CVE-2010-0886 - Java Web Start Arbitrary command-line injection
* CVE-2010-1885 - HPC URL Help Center URL Validation Vulnerability
The malware is currently poorly detected. We are working with Antivirus
companies to ensure they detect the malware.
The malware communicates with the command and control server at:
rmtrrozssjvtuiwe.info
using HTTP. The malware using the following two mechanisms to communicate
with the server:
GET /news/?s=nnnnnn [where 'nnnnnn' appears to be a random number]
POST /news/
