PROBLEM: Security vulnerability in Event Monitoring System (EMS)
release A.03.00, and earlier.
PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX releases 10.20 and 11.00.
DAMAGE: May allow users to change any file permissions on the root
partition.
SOLUTION: Upgrade to EMS A.03.20 release.
AVAILABILITY: The upgrade is available on current Application CD's now.

A. Background
Hewlett-Packard Company has learned of a defect in the
Event Monitoring System (EMS) version A.03.00 which
allows users to change file permissions on any file in the
root partition. This affects ServiceGuard OPS edition as well
as MC/ServiceGuard.
B. Recommended solution
Hewlett-Packard Company recommends that users of early releases
of the Event Monitoring Service migrate to EMS A.03.20.
To identify the EMS release in use on your system, perform the
following: In the directory /etc/opt/resmon/lbin run:
$what p_client registrar
p_client:
EMS (A.03.20)
registrar:
EMS (A.03.20)
The Application CD's are the source of the fixed code starting with
newer releases in the December 98 Application CD, EMS A.03.00.
Since EMS A.03.00 was shipped, there have been two newer versions:
EMS A.03.10, and EMS A.03.20. Both of these are available for HP-UX
10.20 and 11.00 to correct the problem.

Under the Maintenance and Support Menu (Electronic Support Center):

using your ID and password. Check with your system
administrator to see if you have an existing login or use
the "Register" button at the left to create a login. You
will need to login in order to gain access to many areas of
the ITRC. Remember to save the User ID assigned to you, and
your password.
Under the Maintenance and Support Menu, click on the "more..."
link. Under the "Notifications" section (near the bottom of
the page), select "Support Information Digests".
To -subscribe- to future HP Security Bulletins or other
Technical Digests, click the check box (in the left column)
for the appropriate digest and then click the "Update
Subscriptions" button at the bottom of the page.

To -review- bulletins already released, select the link
(in the middle column) for the appropriate digest.
To -gain access- to the Security Patch Matrix, select
the link for "The Security Bulletins Archive". Once in
the archive the third link is to our current Security
Patch Matrix. Updated daily, this matrix categorizes security
patches by platform/OS release, and by bulletin topic.

On the "Support Information Digest Main" page:
click on the "HP Security Bulletin Archive".
