AusCERT Advisory Summary
------------------------
Product: MapServer
Operating System: Linux variants
Mac OS X
Windows
Impact: Execute Arbitrary Code/Commands
Create Arbitrary Files
Access Confidential Data
Access: Remote/Unauthenticated
CVE Names: CVE-2009-0843 CVE-2009-0842 CVE-2009-0841
CVE-2009-0840 CVE-2009-0839
Member content until: Wednesday, April 29 2009
OVERVIEW:
MapServer 5.2.2 and 4.10.4 have been released, correcting multiple
security vulnerabilities.
IMPACT:
(CVE-2009-0839)
A stack-based buffer overflow issue in the mapserv CGI program exists,
allowing a local attacker to execute arbitrary code. [1]
(CVE-2009-0840)
An out-of-bounds memory write can be caused by a remote attacker via a
heap-based buffer underflow by sending a malformed POST request to the
mapserve CGI program. [1]
(CVE-2009-0841)
Insufficient validation of the CGI parameter allows for the creation
of abritrary files. [1]
(CVE-2009-0842)
If an attacker creates a symlink to a file anywhere in the file system,
the mapserv CGI program is vulnerable to data leakage. [1]
(CVE-2009-0843)
Any value passed to msLoadQuery() is not correctly validated and the
mapserv CGI program will attempt to open a file by that name and, if
absent, report its absence. [1]
MITIGATION:
It is recommended that users upgrade to the latest versions. [2]
