   SA Document Body

   A Security Vulnerability in the Solaris ip(7P) Kernel Module's IP-in-IP
   Packet Processing May Lead to a Denial of Service (DoS)

   1. Impact

   A security vulnerability in the Solaris ip(7P) kernel module's
   IP-in-IP packet processing may allow a local unprivileged user to
   cause a system panic, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).
   Sun acknowledges with thanks, Evgeny Sonyagin for discovering and
   reporting this issue.

   2. Contributing Factors

   This issue can occur in the following releases:
   SPARC Platform
     * Solaris 9 without patch 114344-38
     * Solaris 10 without patch 138888-03
     * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_01 though snv_85

   x86 Platform
     * Solaris 9 without patch 119435-26
     * Solaris 10 without patch 138889-03
     * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_01 though snv_85

   Note: Solaris 8 is not impacted by this issue.

   3. Symptoms

   If this issue has been exploited, a system panic would occur,
   generating a stack trace similar to the following:

   4. Workaround

   There is no direct workaround for this issue. Until patches can be
   applied, sites may wish to disallow incoming IP-in-IP traffic, which
   can be done on the local system using a network traffic filtering tool
   such as ipfilter(5) which is shipped with Solaris 10 and later.
   For example, on Solaris 10 the following ipf(1M) rule could be used:

   block in log quick proto 4 from any to any

   This rule disables IP-in-IP packets coming to the system. This may
   affect the existing configuration if tunnel interfaces are present.
   Note that after adding this rule, IP packet filtering must be enabled
   for this workaround to take affect. Please see the ipf(1M) man page
   for details about adding new rules and enabling IP filtering.

   5. Resolution

   This issue is addressed in the following releases:
   SPARC Platform
     * Solaris 9 with patch 114344-38 or later
     * Solaris 10 with patch 138888-03 or later
     * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_86 or later

   x86 Platform
     * Solaris 9 with patch 119435-26 or later
     * Solaris 10 with patch 138889-03 or later
     * OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_86 or later
