USN-6182-1: pngcheck vulnerabilities

21 June 2023

Several security issues were fixed in pngcheck.

Releases

  o Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
  o Ubuntu 18.04 ESM
  o Ubuntu 16.04 ESM

Packages

o pngcheck - Verifies the integrity of PNG, JNG and MNG files

Details

It was discovered that pngcheck incorrectly handled certain inputs. If a
user or an automated system were tricked into opening a specially crafted
input file, a remote attacker could possibly use this issue to cause a
denial of service.

Update instructions

The problem can be corrected by updating your system to the following package
versions:

Ubuntu 20.04

  o pngcheck - 2.3.0-7ubuntu0.20.04.1

Ubuntu 18.04

  o pngcheck - 2.3.0-7ubuntu0.18.04.1~esm1
    Available with Ubuntu Pro

Ubuntu 16.04

  o pngcheck - 2.3.0-7ubuntu0.16.04.1~esm1
    Available with Ubuntu Pro

In general, a standard system update will make all the necessary changes.
