K46641512: FreeType vulnerability CVE-2015-9382

Original Publication Date: 23 Sep, 2020
Latest Publication Date: 16 Apr, 2021

Security Advisory Description

FreeType before 2.6.1 has a buffer over-read in skip_comment in psaux/psobjs.c
because ps_parser_skip_PS_token is mishandled in an FT_New_Memory_Face
operation. (CVE-2015-9382)

Impact

An attacker may be able to use a maliciously crafted file to create a buffer
overflow and potentially expose small amounts of memory from the PostScript
process.

Recommended Actions

If you are running a version listed in the Versions known to be vulnerable
column, you can eliminate this vulnerability by upgrading to a version listed
in the Fixes introduced in column. If the table lists only an older version
than what you are currently running, or does not list a non-vulnerable version,
then no upgrade candidate currently exists.

Mitigation

Do not allow Postscript files to be uploaded for customization or hosted
content.
