OVERVIEW
A security vulnerability has been reported in Novell eDirectory that
can allow attackers to take over administrator sessions.
IMPACT
The following details were reported by the discoverer of this
vulnerability:
"Novell eDirectory DHOST Predictable Session Cookie
This module is able to predict the next session cookie value issued
by the DHOST web service of Novell eDirectory 8.8.5. An attacker
can run this module, wait until the real administrator logs in, then
specify the predicted cookie value to hijack their session." [1]
This was detailed in a metasploit module indicating that the
exploit code is now public.
MITIGATION
At the time of this publication there was no patch available from
Novell. Until one becomes available, administrators may wish to
restrict network access to the server and monitor it for signs
of compromise. Access to administrative functions should always
be restricted to trusted networks and not be publically available.
