1. Impact
A security vulnerability in the Online Help feature of Sun Java System
Directory Server 5.2 may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to
determine if particular files or directories exist on the system. In
certain cases, a single line of a file's contents may be revealed as
well.
Sun acknowledges with thanks, the National Australia Bank's Security
Assurance Team for for the discovery and reporting of this
vulnerability.
2. Contributing Factors
This issue can occur in the following releases for Solaris 9 and 10 on
Solaris SPARC and Solaris x86 Platforms, Linux, Windows, and HP-UX:
PatchZIP (Compressed Archive) and Native package versions:
* Sun Java System Directory Server Enterprise Edition 5
* Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2
Note: Sun Java System Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.x is not
affected by this issue.
To determine the version of Sun Java System Directory Server running
on a system, the following command can be run:
On Solaris, Linux, HP-UX, and AIX systems:
$ cd <installation directory>/bin/slapd/server
$ ./ns-slapd -V -D <instance-directory>
Sun Java(TM) System Directory Server/5.2
On 64-bit Solaris:
$ cd <installation directory>/bin/slapd/server/64
$ ./ns-slapd -V -D <instance-directory>
Sun Java(TM) System Directory Server/5.2
On 64-bit HP-UX:
$ cd <installation directory>/bin/slapd/server/pa20_64
$ ./ns-slapd -V -D <instance-directory>
Sun Java(TM) System Directory Server/5.2
On Windows systems:
>cd <installation directory>/bin/slapd/server
>slapd.exe -V -D <instance-directory>
3. Symptoms
There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described
issue has been exploited to probe for files or directories on the
system.
4. Workaround
To work around this issue, disable the online help by removing the
file '<install-dir>/manual/help/help'.
5. Resolution
This issue is addressed in the following release for Solaris 9 and 10
on Solaris SPARC and Solaris x86 Platforms, Linux, Windows, and HP-UX:
* Sun Java System Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.0 or later
